Learning to be a Mathematician at Wilberforce Primary

Each day at Wilberforce Primary we learn how to be better mathematicians. We have steadily improved our practice to reflect the real reason we learn about maths which is to solve problems and now solve problems every week.

We aim to improve our mental and written skills in maths and we work as a whole class with support where needed. This sometimes means more time with an adult or with an activity suitable to our needs.  We learn how to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide as well as learning about fractions, decimals and percentages.  We also learn about Geometry, Measure and Statistics. After this great learning we get to apply it all when we try out problem solving challenges. Our pupils are later encouraged to share their findings so far with an adult and guidance is offered to them in the form of questioning and development of skills.

Being the best mathematician we can be is about understanding maths in lots of different ways and being challenged to reach our potential. Making links within the specific areas of maths means we have a deeper understanding of the subject. It also means we are embedding knowledge and skills and we are learning to master the new mathematics curriculum. We are now developing and embedding maths across the whole curriculum.

We have daily learning interventions supported by both teachers and classroom assistants. We also have academic tutors who support some children on a one to one basis each week.

Wilberforce measures progress and assessment in terms of levels and age related expectations and whether we are emerging, developing or are secure at the appropriate age band. During this academic year we have been reporting these new bands to our children and their parents.
