At Wilberforce Primary School, we understand how vital it is that children develop a secure, confident understanding of mathematical skills and ideas and how this provides them with opportunities beyond school.
We embrace an approach which nurtures children’s mastery of mathematical concepts and skills. Every day, our pupils have a range of engaging opportunities to solve puzzling problems individually and in groups and apply their learning in new, exciting and challenging ways. Our lessons encourage children to make deeper connections and ideas about what they are studying, whether that is comparing polygons, finding fractions of amounts or formulating ratios. Our pupils strengthen their sense of number and space by not only focusing on how to solve a problem but more importantly why particular methods can be used. In doing so, pupils learn about and study each new idea using concrete objects and materials and representing their ideas visually in their books using diagrams and models.
