PE
Physical Education at Wilberforce Primary provides the children with lots of opportunities to take part in a variety of sports, to compete against themselves, their peers and other schools. We learn about our bodies too and each week Years 1 and 2 participate in MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!) a nutrition and exercise programme that promotes children’s understanding of a healthy diet and the benefits of regular, fun exercise. Years 3 and 5 have weekly swimming lessons at the Jubilee Sports Centre during the Spring term. We welcome Sporting visitors to School and participate in Sports festivals and competitions as well as collaborating with QPR, the MCC and Queen's Park Gardens Sports Hub in our aim to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to represent the school in a sporting activity during their time here.
Art and Design
At Wilberforce Primary School, we believe that Art and Design are subjects which should stimulate awe and wonder in children and give them the opportunity to explore the world through creativity and imagination. It is a way that children can express themselves, what they see and how they feel by using colour, texture and materials. Throughout the year, as part of our topic based curriculum, we give the children the opportunity to look at artist’s work to inspire them and teach them how to critique and form opinions on pieces of art. From this starting point, children can practice and develop different techniques, whilst creating their own piece of art. Work is consistently evaluated and celebrated with much of it ending up on display on our Topic tables.
Music
We believe that Music can have a transformative effect on children, whether that is in performing it, listening to it or composing it. Using Music to help children build their confidence, alongside their Music lessons, we have given them the opportunity to perform in United Learning’s WASSAIL, which won the Best Classical Music Education Initiative at 2018 Music Teachers Award and work with the Bach Choir and perform at Hammersmith Town Hall. On top of this EYFS, KS1 and Year 6 children will put on a production during their time with us.
Humanities
Both History and Geography promote independent learners and help develop them with the skills that they need to succeed in later life. They are taught in a way that brings the subjects to life and allows children to relate to and explore the topics. During each topic, children will be taken on a trip to help enhance their learning and inspire them to find out more. Pupil voice is crucial in the planning of History and Geography and we give children the opportunity to talk to us about what aspects of a certain historical period they would like to learn about and we will include this in our teaching. We enrich the Humanities curriculum by making cross curricular links to enable our pupils to learn more about and reflect on topics.
MFL
We have decided to teach Latin as our foreign language at Wilberforce Primary School with the support of ‘Classics for All’. By learning Latin, we are equipping children with the foundations for future foreign language learning. Not only will it allow them to be prepared for languages at secondary school, it supports us in our teaching of Literacy and Grammar and will allow the children to learn the logistics of language in a different context.
Computing
With a focus on resilience and problem solving, computing can give us many opportunities to allow children to develop these skills alongside the national curriculum. We use Lego Wedo to help teach the children to code and using our class laptops we teach the children to choose and use apps and programmes purposefully. E-safety is an important part of our curriculum and we ensure that children understand how to stay safe online and use social media responsibly.
