~ World’s Tallest Basketball Player and Britain’s Tallest Man speaks to children about celebrating diversity ~
Wilberforce Primary pupils have been aiming high after an inspiring visit from the world’s Tallest Professional Basketball Player and Britain’s Tallest Man. Paul Sturgess ran a whole-school assembly on 7 November and spoke to the children about his incredible career.
Paul, who is 7 foot 7.26 inches, told the children about how he played in a number of US basketball teams under the nickname ‘Tiny’.
The pupils were amazed by Paul’s height and how much he has achieved even when others doubted him. His message to his eager audience was to always believe in yourself and work hard to achieve your dreams.
After the assembly, Paul ran workshops with each class, teaching them different basketball skills and showing off his Harlem Globetrotter tricks. He showed them his Guinness World Record and took part in a question and answer session.
Mark Jackson, PE Lead at Wilberforce Primary, said:
"It was inspiring listening to Paul's story. The children were so engaged and amazed by Paul and how he hasn't let being different stop him. I have never seen them left so excited and open-mouthed by a visitor before!
“Paul’s talk was the perfect example of how we deliver Education with Character. His story was brimming with fascinating tales of persevering in the face of adversity, working towards ambitious goals and having confidence in oneself. These are all attributes that we nurture in our pupils and it was wonderful for them to meet such an incredible role model.”
Year 6 pupil Darine said:
"I was flabbergasted when I saw Paul but now I believe I can achieve anything I want to."
Year 3 pupil Adam said:
"Meeting Paul was so good! I really enjoyed watching his trick shots and spinning the basketball!"
